Las Posadas at Abbey Court

I went to the Abbey Court Center on Saturday to talk to Dr. Blau, and she and Alfonso had a great idea. There is a Spanish celebration called "Las Posadas" from December 16 to December 24, and we are going to try to facilitate a Las Posadas celebration for the people at Abbey Court. Hopefully this will bring them out together and give them a greater sense of community. I will briefly introduce this idea to the class tomorrow, but I don't know too much about Las Posadas. If there are any Hispanic students that can share knowledge or ideas about how to better facilitate this at Abbey Court, please share tomorrow and in the coming weeks.

In learning that Las Posadas is a yearly, nine day event for Latin Americans to get together and celebrate this tradition, I think its important for our class to help assimilate and honor this event for the people of Abbey Court. I think it will be a great experience for us (as we are about to leave for our holidays) to learn more about their culture and help the people of Abbey Court to uphold such an important tradition.

Holding a Las Posadas celebration would be one small way of honoring a holiday the residents of Abbey Court might not be able to recognize. The celebration of Posadas is a tradition in their culture and would mean a lot in signifying the existence of their community and acceptance by the surrounding Carrboro community. It’s important to let them know that others from UNC and Carrboro understand and respect their culture in order to assist in righting the false impression that their culture and traditions may not be as important as the majority’s culture.

I'm part of the Las Posadas committee. This is an integral celebration in the culture of many people who reside at Abbey Court. While they are trying to integrate themselves into the American culture, it is important for them to keep some of their culture as well. Hodling a Las Posadas celebration will do just that. Additionally, it was show that Americans respect their culture and tradition.
